What are the current trends in Bathroom design?

Absolute Project Management

We’re wary of following design ‘trends’ in terms of decorating ideas that are fashionable in the moment – but do find it interesting to reflect on the common themes we see in client briefs, and what the factors are that drive them.

Here are 5 trends we’re seeing in terms of bathing;

  1. Compact but luxurious freestanding baths. With clients in London and Brighton, space is often limited which makes it difficult to fit in both a bath and a walk-in shower. A well designed small bath can enable a layout that doesn’t compromise on either.

  2. ‘Main Character Energy’ fitted baths. Freestanding baths often look gorgeous, and have been a bathroom aspiration trend for a while. However, they take up a lot of room and are sometimes not as comfortable as they appear. A fitted bath paired with feature tiles and wall-mounted tapware creates a visual impact while prioritising comfort.

  3. Tactile finishes. Think matte bathtubs and other sanitaryware, knurled taps, and non-uniform tiles like hand-glazed Zellige. This trend is inspired by luxurious spa spaces, and emphasises the bathroom as a place to relax rather than just a place to get clean!

  4. Dopamine bathrooms. More of our clients are now choosing bright colours, patterned wallpaper, chequerboard floors or other playful decorating choices. This is part of the wider design trend emerging post lockdown of ‘dopamine design’, with clients focussing on design that made them happy rather than projecting a particular image, especially in the more private parts of their home.

  5. Layered lighting. Bright functional light for getting ready, good warm light for showering and soft warm lighting for bathing – as well as very low level lighting for night time use. Beautifully styled bathrooms on social media have driven an interest in bathroom feature lighting – and the choice of fittings has really improved in recent years as suppliers have made this more of a focus.
