Tom Raffield at Morgan Furniture – Clerkenwell design week

When we heard Tom Raffield had been invited to speak at Morgan Furniture (another APM favourite), we jumped at the chance to hear about his process and pick his brain on how to clean his beautiful but intricate pieces…[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1560343299659{padding-top: 0px !important;}”]

Background

10 years ago, Tom Raffield began developing his steam bending technique at university, pushing the craft of bending wood within a time limit by steaming and bending sections, working along longer pieces.  Following graduation, he found the usual design employment avenues were not interested in adopting his technique, so he decided to branch out alone.

Today he and his wife Danielle run a thriving, internationally successful, business, employing 36 people from their Cornish workshop base and continuing to develop and hone their technique with lights, furnishings and even the odd architectural project.  You may have seen their amazing designs recently at Chelsea Flower Show.

Biophilic Inspiration

Taking inspiration directly from nature, Tom loves to create shapes from the patterns and curves he finds in the woods surrounding the workshop or the Cornish coast nearby. His Modum range is inspired from the internal structure found within a piece of seaweed Danielle found on the beach.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]

Beautiful & Practical

At Absolute, we’re extremely keen to specify sustainably-sourced, lasting pieces so we quizzed Tom on how his Arame wall lights can be protected/ cleaned given dust is likely to be an issue.  He explained that the wood is coated in an eco-friendly water based varnish which repels dust.  Additionally, a light duster can be used to remove any troublesome spiders from the folds.  We’ve now proposed the Arame light for two projects where it will look amazing!

We’re looking forward to visiting the Tom Raffield team in their new digs in Falmouth soon!  We also look forward to using more Morgan pieces – currently in love with the tall backed armchair and the ‘puzzle’ coffee table…[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]For more inspiration from Clerkenwell Design Week, read our round up.
