We’re really delighted the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) has published a new code of conduct, coming into force on 1 April 2021.
At a time when improved corporate governance is such a key consideration in so many industries, it’s very timely the BIID has set out clearly the standards both for skills and integrity to which members are expected to adhere, helping to further advance the reputation of our profession.
Absolute is a BIID Registered Design Practice – we’re really supportive of the BIID’s aims and achievements. We all frequently attend BIID events and are involved in two (and counting…) of the management committees.
We’re super proud that our amazing Liz Bell, as the Chair of the Prof Practice Committee, worked so diligently in producing the Code. We saw all the work that went into it which involved:
Reviewing the existing Code and highlighting areas for improvement
Analysing ‘peer’ industries codes of conduct (RIBA, ARB and those of various other professional services organisations)
Completely rewriting the Code and preparing supporting definitions and guidance to make it as easy as possible to use
Presenting this to the BIID membership and securing its approval by a vote at the 2020 General Meeting
Key features of the new Code:
BIID members (individual designers and registered practices) are expected to adhere to the provisions AND be guided by the spirit of the Code
It has been structured with a simple format and written in plain English
There are 3 clear sections – Client, Profession and World – setting out 14 overarching principles

“The Professional Practice Committee and I put so much hard work into producing the updated Code of Conduct and are thrilled it has been approved by members. We set out to produce a Code which is clear to use, easy to refer to and demonstrates to clients and the industry the high levels of skill and professionalism they can expect from BIID Associate and Registered members. We are also delighted that the new Code includes and promotes the important values of the BIID and its members.
I am excited that our new BIID Code of Conduct will protect and where necessary improve the reputation of the Interior design industry.”
