2018 in review
We predicted:
Terrazzo flooring: This was everywhere – not just on floors! This look was heavily adopted & imitated by the high street for home accessories.
Full coverage (e.g. wallpaper or colour everywhere, not just statement wall): Not universally adopted but those who did went big – House of Hackney we’re looking at you…
Conflicting colours/ finishes & patterns: Vibrant patterns & colour were all over the design shows this year, with bold fabric prints providing an accessible way to play with this trend.
Brass: Ever present – particularly popular in light fittings.

Trends for 2019…
Everything Bauhaus – with the centenary this year of the founding of the Bauhaus school, there’s even more interest in the seminal modernist shapes that emerged from this movement. We’ll see more lattice windows and simple furniture forms. These work surprisingly well with some of the other emerging trends (below).
More Brass – moving from the colour of accessories to a feature colour in itself, used to bring richness to a kitchen or bathroom.
Open storage – With Marie Kondo’s show making waves on Netflix, a move towards having your minimal, curated set of belongings on display. Expect pinterest to be full of beautifully arranged utility cupboards proudly on display. We say – approach with care, and be realistic about the tidying/ de-cluttering behaviour of your whole household before taking all the doors off!

Natural fibres & ‘handmade’ – driven by environmental concerns and political turbulence, a craving for things that show their natural or artisanal roots. Texture & imperfection. In particular: woven rugs and sumptuous knotted throws.
Decorative details in natural wood – Parquet floors are ‘must have’ and we see this spreading into wooden furniture too:

…and beyond
Smart home – Contrasting with the ‘back to nature’ trend, the heavy push of home-hubs by google, amazon & apple will mean an increasing demand for ‘smart’ lighting, blinds, media systems etc that work with your home hub. We suggest a note of caution here – competing & fast-moving tech means high risk of redundancy (a new version of cable for data connections comes out at least once per year).
If you’re tempted, work with your project manager & electrician to configure your system in a way that won’t require a full re-wire in a few years. We always design in ‘future proofing’ in our projects. Watch this space for our upcoming journal on Lutron lighting control systems.
Plastic rehabilitation – Around the autumn design shows we expect to see further exploration of ‘new plastics’ – materials made from recycled problem-plastics. This is a good thing only if the resulting products are designed for ultra-long term use, rather than adding to the waste cycle. We love Smile Plastics https://smile-plastics.com/inspiration/
