Clerkenwell Design Week 2019

Sustainability & Natural Materials

Sustainability was a theme for the installations along the exhibition trail – and the highlights for us were the brands focussing on sustainable products. We particularly loved;

  1. Biophilic designs in steam-bent wood by Tom Raffield

  2. Rattan outdoor furniture by Sika Design

  3. Recycled Terrazzo flooring from Aectual

  4. Alusid tiles made from recycled materials including waste from producing bathroom sanitaryware. Atmosphere & Events

The atmosphere this year was amazing, with a wide range of events, displays & innovations. We started the week with a breakfast briefing by one of the CDW team organised over breakfast by BIID – which was really useful in ‘orienting’ us and providing info about what to do/ new/ interesting pieces to visit.

The pink walking tour pavement lines & vinyl artworks along the route were really useful in showing the way.

Watch this space for updates from some of the excellent talks we attended – including;

  1. Tom Raffield in collaboration with Morgan

  2. ‘Sustainability: the new normal’ host by Parkside

  3. Creating Homes for the Future

As the event gets bigger year on year, we’d love an app with a map to make it easier to see where you are and what is near at hand. There is so much to see, spread across a large ‘old-London’ area of higgledy piggledy streets, that even if you know the area it’s easy to miss something.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”2870,2871,2857″ display_title_caption=”true” layout=”3″ item_spacing=”default” gallery_style=”7″ load_in_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]From L-R: APM team at Arper showroom / Vinyl wall art in Passing Alley / Bottle House installation[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]

Lighting at Fabric

As in previous years, Fabric nightclub made an excellent venue for the Lighting exhibition (and gave one APM team member a blast from the past from her time working there!)

Particularly wonderful stands included;

  1. Dutch brand Calex, with their pendant lights of unique shapes in blown glass standing out beautifully.

  2. Ateljé Lyktan & Fourmation collaboration – with a unique spin on fluorescent lighting.

  3. Imagin, with their unique British-made floor and table lamps as well as wall lights being beautiful focal pieces, using brushed metals and frosted glass as feature materials in their designs.

Look out for our round-up on Houzz[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”2850,2849,2851″ display_title_caption=”true” layout=”3″ item_spacing=”default” gallery_style=”7″ load_in_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]From L-R: Calex pendant lights / Atelje Lyktan & Fourmation / Imagin floor & table lamps[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]

Showrooms & Stalls

The Design Week is a welcome opportunity to visit the wealth of show-rooms in Clerkenwell, as well as the showcase stalls.

We enjoyed seeing new products from old favourites including Hayche (who have an exciting new shop on Great Sutton Street), Morgan Furniture, Domus and Established. Meanwhile Knightsbridge and Arper showed that commercial furniture needn’t be dull with bold upholstery and fun designs. Elegant modular furniture in particular translates well to creating an adaptable home (and fitting through narrow hallway of a victorian terrace…)[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”2858,2862,2860,2859,2854,2855″ display_title_caption=”true” layout=”3″ item_spacing=”default” gallery_style=”7″ load_in_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]Top L-R: Hayche / Morgan / Domus
